Berkeley Transportation Systems is a privately held transportation systems consultant firm. The founders of BTS have been active in many ITS areas, but the focus of the company is on transportation data systems.
BTS was formed in 1998 by Dr. Petty. Since then it has expanded to a hard-working, dedicated team of computer science and transportation engineering specialists. Early customers have included state DOTs, academic institutions and other transportation consultant firms.
Dr. Karl Petty • President, CEO
Karl Petty holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from UC Berkeley and has been a Director of Engineering managing software development teams in multiple Silicon Valley firms. BTS has developed, implemented and now maintains the Freeway Performance Measurement System (PeMS).
Dr. Petty has been involved in many ITS architectural projects, ITS evaluations, and freeway operations research projects. He is a member of the TRB Freeway Operations Committee, the TRB Urban Transportation Data and Information Systems, and the TRB Archived Data User Systems Subcommittee.
Rob Hranac • Vice President
At BTS, Mr. Hranac has worked to deploy several Performance Measurement Systems (PeMS) with a variety of clients. He participates in all phases of PeMS deployment, acting as a senior subject matter expert with emphasis on the planning, analysis, documentation, and presentation phases to BTS clients. PeMS is a system that applies higher level mathematical and statistical principles to complex technical engineering problems related to traffic sensors to deliver automated data mining solutions. Because of this, PeMS systems require a great deal of configuration management for clients and attention to software metrics to ensure successful deployment. To facilitate this, Mr. Hranac serves as a project lead, responsible for ensuring the quality and timeliness of services delivered. As such, he reviews and approves the design and preparation of technical documentation and delivers senior management presentations and briefings as required by each project. Mr. Hranac has served as the primary client interface, as well as the lead in systems analysis, design, integration, documentation.
