SYSTEMS

BTS sells PeMS as a standalone system which can be deployed at your TMC. The PeMS system takes in raw loop detector data (either single or double loop data) and produces high-level performance reports for your transportation system. It does this by applying appropriate filters, performing temporal and spatial imputation, and aggregating across time and space. The results are then presented as a series of web pages. You can examine everything from the raw single loop data up to region-wide performance measures over time. A sample of the reports that we provide is given below:

 Loop data diagnostics and health
Fidelity of the data (number of samples over time)
Plots of the number of bad loops per day
 Table identifying the bad loops
Plots of various freeway quantities versus time
Speed, volume, occupancy, VMT, VHT, delay
 5-minute values, 1-hour values, 1-day values
Plots of quantities versus time of day
All freeway quantities averaged over selected days (days of the week)
Ability to exclude holidays from averages
 Plots of quantity relationships
Selected quantities plotted against each other over time. Useful for detailed  traffic analysis.
 Daily Performance Measures
Average Daily Traffic, Average Weekday Traffic
AM and PM peak period volumes (e.g.: 6-9AM, 3-6PM)
AM and PM peak 5 Min, 1 HR Volumes
 Aggregated Performance Measures
 Daily (S,M,T,W,R,F,S) averages
Weekly (5 day, 7 day) and monthly
Ability to exclude holidays from averages
 Analytical capabilities
 Lane closure analysis
Level of Service Analysis (based on the HCM)
Export data to .csv and .xls format.

PeMS runs on a standard Unix platform and leverages the capabilities of an Oracle database.

Key Benefits

Cost Effective

Get more from your current infrastructure. With PeMS, you don't have to build more sensor systems - just use technology to leverage the ones you already have in the ground.

Simple

Our intuitive web interface allows for the easy navigation of your data. The plots and tables which we provide allow you to clearly see trouble spots in your transportation system.

Easy to Try Out

You can see the PeMS system in action on your data before you commit to purchasing it. You can submit your data to us via our unique Sample Data Processing Program and we'll grind it for you.

Secure

We provide a full set of access control facilities which allow for sensitive data and reports to be restricted to authorized individuals.

Additional Revenue Sources

As Value Added Resellers (VARs) become more prominent, your data becomes valuable. Collecting, cleaning and distributing data can be the basis for additional revenue through VARs.

Key Features

Standard reports on performance

With PeMS, you can continuously monitor the performance of your transportation system in order to keep it running at peak capacity.

Integration with GIS maps

Leverage your existing investment in GIS software by linking it with a PeMS system. You can now display important transportation information on intuitive GIS maps.

Center-to-center communications

For our hosted partners, we have a flexible, open architecture which allows for the robust collection of transportation data across multiple locations. By being robust to WAN failures we ensure that your reports are as accurate as possible.

Integration with other data

PeMS has the ability to integration with other transportation systems data to improve the diversity of reports. We already integrate with some incident and weather data.

Ability to provide public with a view into your system

PeMS can easily be customized to provide the public with a view into the transportation system. This can range from simple speed maps to complete access to the data grinding results.

Case Study: Travel Time Trends

With PeMS, you can monitor travel time trends on various routes in your system over time. Travel time variability is now a common measure of system performance. Knowing the uncertainty that users face when taking certain routes is a valuable tool for planning decisions. PeMS allows you to define routes in your system via a simple web wizard. It then automatically calculates travel times and allows you to view the travel time over each day or to examine averages over the time of day. You can specify what range of days over which you'd like to see the averages and you can look at specific days of the week and/or choose to exclude holidays. In addition, you can plot the average and plus/minus a standard deviation as well as the median and the 25th and 75th percentiles.

Case Study: Detailed Time Series Graph

The most fundamental graph is the detailed time series graph. This is simply a plot of a measured or computed quantity at a specific location or across a geographic region. Examples include speed, flow and occupancy at a single location or VMT, VHT or delay across a region, like a freeway or city. This is the easiest and most intuitive way to spot trends across time. The navigation controls allow a user to move up and down the freeway while looking at the same type of plot giving them the ability to easily follow traffic patterns as they
progress through the system."

Case Study: Detailed Traffic Theory Graphs

The PeMS system allows users to drill down into the details of each and every loop detector in the system. For example, users can look at the fundamental traffic relationship between flow and occupancy (which is a proxy for density). Users can plot any of the measured or computed quantities against each other over any specified time range.
